Cyclists urged to hang back from lorries to cut the number of crashes and improve cycling safety.

Cyclists are being encouraged to ‘hang back’ from lorries in a safety campaign launched today (26 September 2016) by Road Safety Minister Andrew Jones to reduce the number of deaths.

Riding a bike is very safe, and is greener, healthier and more sustainable than other forms of transport but cutting the number of accidents is our top priority.

The THINK! campaign has been developed after statistics showed last year a fifth of crashes where cyclists were killed involved HGVs.

A large proportion of deaths happen when a cyclist is at the front left of the truck, and almost a third of all crashes between cyclists and HGVs happen when the lorry is turning left.

    Transport Minister Andrew Jones said:

We are investing £300 million over the next 4 years to help make Britain a cycling nation.

Reducing the number of cyclists killed on our roads is a key priority. Since 2010 the number has decreased to its lowest level.

This campaign will raise awareness amongst urban cyclists and help make our roads safer for those on 2 wheels.

The campaign film entitled ‘Things you shouldn’t get caught between’, as well as posters, carry the message: ‘Don’t get caught between a lorry and a left turn. Hang back’.

The campaign will also target HGV drivers through partnership activity with the Freight Transport Association (FTA) and will be supported by tips for car drivers in general to raise awareness of cycle safety on the roads.

Christopher Snelling, Freight Transport Association Head of National and Regional Policy, said:

We need to make our busy urban roads as safe as possible for all users and it’s important that both HGV drivers and cyclists understand the risks created by sharing the limited road space and know what steps they can take to minimise them.

This Department for Transport (DfT) campaign highlights one of the key danger zones – the blind spot at the front left of a HGV. New design innovations such as transparent cab doors all have a part to play in improving safety in the long term but increased awareness can have immediate impact. FTA encourages all HGV drivers and cyclists to visit the campaign website to find out more about this important message.

On top of the THINK! campaign, the government is investing £40 million into Bikeability training over the next 4 years, which will provide more than 1 million children the key skills to keep them safe on the road.

About time, cyclists must think for their own safety, whether this will make the suicide jockeys coming through the red lane rat runs think again? I hope so, but some how doubt it.

    Silver Fox,
How dare you... tonight I witnessed two separate RLJ's in cars within the space of 5 mins. One of which nearly took out a cyclist who had stopped at the red light. Your comment is pathetic.
The red lane is there to allow cyclists to make progress to the front of a queue. Motorists should be stopping at the first stop line.....a legal requirement.! Most don't.!
Also, if you watch the video carefully, the lorry overtakes the cyclist and then turns left across his path.! What a ridiculously devised advert. The driver would be done for dangerous driving and causing death. This advert is poorly devised and should be reviewed. AND, all drivers educated better to be more aware of cyclists. Like it or not, numbers will increase and awareness is key. That said, we should adopt a more Dutch like approach where penalties are harsher for drivers found guilty of injuring or killing cyclists.

I agree with your comment regarding the red lane but would question how many cyclists actually attempt use the red box at traffic lights, most seem to ride up onto the pavement and turn to avoid waiting. Silver fox has a point about safety, it's up to cyclists to consider their own safety a little more instead of constantly whining about poor driving. I'm afraid that with millions of vehicles on the roads nothing is going to change in that regard but if it's a choice between a cyclist and a 20 ton lorry, I'd expect the cyclist to think a bit more about the outcome, treating every driver as an
    idiot and staying safe.

No problem when cyclists make their way to the front when traffic is stopped at lights, BUT over time I have witnessed 4 instances of cyclists coming close to getting run over at traffic lights, each time it has been a cyclist using the red lane rat run when traffic is moving away from the lights, ignoring totally that there are vehicles ahead indicating a left turn, two cases the vehicles concerned had already started to turn and yet the cyclists still pressed on, just where these cyclists thought they were going I have no idea.

One cyclist stopped while hurling abuse at all and sundry, the other prat actually cut across the moving traffic into the outside lane, the only reason he got away with it, was entirely due to drivers vigilance and reaction.

I walk, cycle and drive, I am not stupid enough to somehow think that I can walk, ride or drive just any way I feel and that everyone else will get out of my way.

I accept that the video is not good and certainly the truck driver should have been aware of the cyclist in this case, but every road user must look to their own actions just as much as the actions of others, if someone habitually puts themselves in a position of danger, sooner or later their luck will run out, I'm afraid chanting I was in the right doesn't help when you're sat in a hospital bed, or worse.

I think this is a great work in terms of saving cyclist life. Because the previous record in this is so bad. Here yako casino canada provide amazing casino games for interested games at low price. And I want to appreciate and admire them for raising this kind of issue.
